Art Of Flower Arrangements

Flowers are undoubtedly an element of beauty. They find their place in almost every occasion of life, in different colors, different shapes and in different types of flower arrangements. Flower arrangement is a fine art where beautiful blooms are arranged in diverse bunches and patterns to further enhance the beauty of flowers. They are also vital part of the ambience of any occasion like birthday, wedding, farewell, cocktail party or any other important events in life. Flower arrangements are organized with design and color to create a meaningful ambience using different varieties of flowers, foliage, greenery and many other flower accessories.

But this art cannot be made limited to celebrations and occasions. It can also be used to beautify homes and offices. A kitchen table at home or an office desk equally deserves a pleasing bunch of fragrant and colorful flowers as any other grand place of festivity. While designing one, we must keep in mind the recipients likes and dislikes, the place the flower arrangement is meant for and the occasion it is being presented at. Fresh cut flowers, dried flowers and artificial sticks thus, can be used to design a special arrangement, just right for the special moment.

Flower arrangements can broadly be categorized in three different styles:

• Oriental

The importance is given to the flowing lines in the floral setup.

• Traditional/ Western

A bunch or a mass of flowers is used as focal points.

• Modern

In this particular style, the rules are bypassed and infinite imagination takes over. Looking at the shape, color and size of the flowers, unlimited patterns can be designed that create a wow factor every time something new is sculpted.

Basic principles of designing a flower arrangement:

The art of floral arrangements doesn’t abide by any set rules today. It all is about availability and imagination that works while creating colorful bouquets. Yet there are few basic principles that need to be looked into while one is at it.

• Design

The structural pattern that is determined as per the location, occasion and the raw material available, falls under the designing of arrangement. It is also a visualized plan according to the size and shape of the expected floral arrangement.

• Balance

The arrangement that is created by putting in much creativity, time and hard work, should also be stable visually and in the form too. Form and color give stability to it. Symmetrical Balance and Asymmetrical Balance are two different types of assortments that many flower patterns revolve around.

Symmetrical gives importance to the use of same size, shape and color of flowers at different ends of the arrangement to maintain the balance visually and in terms of weight too.

Asymmetrical plays around with the color that gives a feel of equal weight at both ends in visual appearance. For instance, dark colored flowers appear heavy whereas light colored appear light and spreading. Hence, dark colored are used less in number and light colored are used at the outer and upper portions of the arrangement.

• Scale

It largely depends on the container that will hold the arrangement. Based on the shape and size of the container, flowers and other components are chosen according to their height and spread.

• Rhythm

When we look at a flower arrangement, it should direct our eye along with its defining line right till the end. This is where the rhythm plays an important role. It should be designed in such a way that the main line of the preparation is followed and understood with a musical feel to it.

• Focal Point

The centre portion of the arrangement which appears to be spreading out is called the focal point. All the components seem to be emerging out of this point. Hence the dark and large variety of flowers should be placed in the centre, complimented by the lighter and long ones towards the ends and outer portions.

• Harmony

It is of utmost importance that the floral arrangement should be in harmony to the occasion for which they are meant. Red and vibrant flowers would compliment a wedding, whereas an arrangement of pastel and subtle colors is perfect for an afternoon brunch party. The containers should also be taken in account while taking care of the harmony aspect. Flowers and containers must be in contrast with each other so that they do not get mixed-up.
